Getting Rid of Squirrels in Your Home

Often depicted in cartoons as wacky and fun-loving little critters, squirrels actually pose a threat to your home when inside it and unfortunately your home is perfect for them. They can easily find their way inside your homes without your knowledge and cause a lot of damage, which is why you should always be vigilant.

Their Ideal Shelter

Squirrels may sneak into your home for safety from the outside. Poor weather conditions or dangerous predators can lead them to seek refuge in your home. If a female squirrel is pregnant, they will enter in a dire search for a safe place to birth their young, and your attic can be just that.

The Damage

If you have squirrels in your home, you can find yourself sustaining damages such as shredded insulation as they make their nests for their young. They also need to maintain their teeth, and they do so by gnawing away at wooden beams in your attic and exposed wiring, both of which could spell out disaster for you. A small infestation can grow very quickly because some squirrels use their urine as a pheromone to attract more squirrels to the area. Keep an eye out for the telltale signs of squirrel infestation:

  • Scampering sounds in your attic and walls as they scurry around.
  • Shredded insulation
  • Exposed wood and wiring chewed on
  • Droppings and urine soaked into your insulation
